Dendrobium Orchids

While two genera boast more species, the enormously popular beautiful Dendrobium orchid has by far the most horticulturally  worthwhile diversity. Its 900 Asian and Pacific tropical and subtropical species range from hot lowlands to Himalayan snowtops. A third of them are found in Papua New Guinea. Most have pseudobulbs, although elongated canes are also a common growth type; flowers range from tiny to exceptionally showy and are often very long-lasting.

More than 6.000 Dendrobium hybrids have been made. The casual hobbyist is most likely to encounter the brilliant “Yamamoto” Dendrobium nobile hybrids or the Den, phalaenopsis types; both are cane-growers, with the first type deciduous and the second evergreen. dendrobium orchid is Greek for “life i na tree”, testament to the plants’ mostly epiphytic nature.
